As a pianist, teacher, and father of a two-and-a-half year old, I was very uplifted by this article. It has always been a given that my daughter would be taking private lessons, but now that the time is coming closer (she will probably start Suzuki violin at age 4), it causes me to really reflect on how important it is for me to make this a positive experience for her. As a teacher, I've witnessed too many instances where students have gotten burned out or pushed too hard and turned off of music all together. It's so important to look for opportunities to push for musical progress, but to make it an enriching part of their development.

When I completed my Suzuki certification, it was actually in conjunction with a week-long summer camp, and I too witnessed the camaraderie, motivation, and positive energy that was present. I can't wait to give my daughter opportunities like this as she progresses in her musical studies.

Oh my, I can relate to this. First I struggle with violin, my good friend is awesome! I play piano, guitar and sing. I took violin lessons but...well I, let's leave it at struggle. :)
I love camp (and although it hasn't been music camp, which I’m hoping to attend next year) I can connect at how that alone has 'changed' things in other parts of my life. This article has stimulated my desire to go to a music camp even more so.

I am really impressed with the information you provided in this article. Music is an important part of the worship time at camp... important enough that some staff get together yearly to write music that helps communicate what is taught in the Bible sessions. Commendable job done by you. Congratulations!!!

Such a powerful posting! I am so happy to hear that she gained that sense of community from the camp. This is something that us "lonely pianists" are starved for. We don't often get the social aspect of music as do other instrumentalists.

Anything that ignites the spark of true joy in music - and a chance to identify onself as a "musician" at a young age is invaluable. Kudos to her teacher - and all the other teachers who put in the time to create these opportunities for their students!
